What is Nasal Swab Test Kit?

A nasal swab, is a test that checks for viruses and bacteria that cause respiratory infections. Secretions from the back of your nose and upper throat are collected using a swab. The secretions are sent to a laboratory where they are grown. This makes it easier to identify which viruses, bacteria or fungi are present. The results are sent back to your doctor who will use them to help diagnose what germs could be causing your symptoms.

What is the Nasal Swab Test Kit Used For?

A nasal swab is used to diagnose certain infections of the respiratory system. These include:

01/

The flu.

02/

COVID-19.

03/

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This is a common and usually mild respiratory infection. But it can be dangerous to young babies and older adults.

04/

Whooping cough, a bacterial infection that causes severe fits of coughing and trouble breathing.

05/

Meningitis, a disease caused by inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord.

06/

MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), a serious type of bacterial infection that can be very difficult to treat.

Sars COV-2 Antigen Rapid Test

Principle of Nasal Swab Test Kit

The COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test Cassette (Nasal Swab) is a qualitative, lateral flow immunoassay for the detection of the N protein of SARS-CoV-2 in Nasal Swab.

In this test, antibody specific to the N protein of SARS-CoV-2 is separately coated on the test line regions of the test cassette. During testing, the extracted specimen reacts with the antibody to N protein of SARS-CoV-2 that are coated onto particles. The mixture migrates up the membrane to react with the antibody to N protein of SARS-CoV-2 on the membrane and generate one coloured line in the test regions. The presence of this coloured line of the test regions indicates a positive result. To serve as a procedural control, a coloured line will always appear in the control region if the test has performed properly.

Features of Antigen tests

Antigen tests, sometimes called rapid tests, look for specific proteins on the surface of the virus.

Antigen tests produce results faster than other tests.

The test sample is collected with a nasal swab.

A positive test result means you currently have COVID-19 and do not need to test again.

Antigen tests are not as sensitive as molecular tests, no matter where they are performed, such as at home, a clinic, or pharmacy. This means that you could have a negative test result even if you are infected with COVID-19.

To be confident you do not have COVID-19, the CDC and FDA currently recommend serial testing, which means taking more than one antigen test if your first test is negative. If you have symptoms of COVID-19 and get a negative result, you should test again in 48 hours.

Testing the Quick and Easy Way

Collecting the Nasal Sample From Left and Right Nostril

Insert the sterile swab into the nostril with the most secretion. While rotating the swab, insert the swab 2 cm (slightly less than 1 inch) parallel to the palate (not upwards) towards the throat into the nostril until resistance is met at turbinates. Rotate the swab 4 times for about 15 seconds against the nasal wall and remove it from the nostril.

Repeat previous step. with the same swab in the other nostril. Samples must be collected from both nostrils using the same swab.

Preparing a Sample

Insert the swab into an extraction buffer tube. While squeezing the buffer tube, stir the swab more than 10 times.

Remove the swab while squeezing the sides of the tube to extract the liquid from the swab.

Press the nozzle cap tightly onto the tube.

Performing a Test

Place the test device on a flat surface and apply 4 drops of extracted sample at a 90º angle to the specimen well of the test device. Read the test result at 15 to 30 min.

Interpreting Results

A colored line appears in the top section of the result window to show that the test is working properly. This is the control line (C). Even if the control line is faint, the test should be considered to have been performed properly. If no control line is visible the test is invalid.

In case of a positive result, a colored line appears in the lower section of the result window. This is the test line (T). Even if the test line is very faint or not uniform, the test result should be interpreted as a positive result.

Storage and Stability
  • Store as packaged at room temperature or refrigerated (2-30℃). The test is stable through the expiration date printed on the sealed pouch. The test must remain in the sealed pouch until use.
  • DO NOT FREEZE.
  • Do not use beyond the expiration date.
  • Only used the test at room temperature.

What to look for in an at-home COVID-19 test?

A person may consider several factors when looking for an at-home COVID-19 test. These include:

Certifications

Some companies work with laboratories that follow the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)Trusted Source. This means that they have federal certifications and are open to regular inspections. A person can also check whether the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the tests.

COVID-19 variants

Product pages include information on whether the test kits can detect newer COVID-19 variants, such as Omicron.

Results

Most brands issue results within 3 days. People who need rapid tests may wish to choose a brand that offers results within 30 minutes.

Consultations

Some companies offer a free consultation for individuals who wish to discuss their results with a healthcare professional.

Instructions

Companies should provide people with clear and easy-to-follow instructions. Some companies may also provide step-by-step videos on their websites.

Testing method

A person can choose to purchase saliva, nasal, or saliva and nasal swab tests.

Collection method

Some tests require people to collect their sample at home and mail it to the provider’s laboratory. However, some companies stock self-tests that issue results within a few minutes and do not require individuals to mail the sample to a testing facility.

Common Problems of Nasal Swab Test Kit

Q: How do you use a nasal test kit?

A: The test should be performed using a nose sample only. Insert the fabric tip of the swab just inside one nostril (about 1.5cm up your nose). Gently wipe the swab around the inside of your nostril in a circular motion 5 times for at least 5 seconds. Slowly remove it.

Q: What are the two types of swab tests?

A: Nasopharyngeal – takes a sample from deep inside the nose, reaching the back of the throat, and should only be collected by a trained health care provider. Oropharyngeal – takes a sample from the middle part of the throat (pharynx) just beyond the mouth, and should only be collected by a trained health care provider.

Q: Is swab test and PCR test the same?

A: PCR test is a swab test. There are two types of COVID-19 tests: the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test and the antigen test, known as the rapid test. Both tests require a sample from the patient, usually a nasal swab.

Q: What is a nasal swab antigen test?

A: Antigen tests, sometimes called rapid tests, look for specific proteins on the surface of the virus. Antigen tests produce results faster than other tests. The test sample is collected with a nasal swab. A positive test result means you currently have COVID-19 and do not need to test again.

Q: How to do a swab test at home?

A: Open your mouth wide and rub the swab over both your tonsils (or where they would have been) at the back of your throat. Do this 4 times on each side. Using the same swab, wipe the inside of your nose as set out in the test kit instructions.

Q: What are the results of a nasal swab test for COVID-19?

A: If a test line (T) is visible together with a control line (C), this means that the result is positive. Look carefully at the result: The test should be considered positive if two lines are visible - even if they are faint. A positive test result means it is very likely that you have COVID‑19.

Q: Which is better rapid test or swab test?

A: Antigen tests detect certain proteins using nasal or throat swabs. It is able to diagnose an active coronavirus infection. Positive results from an antigen test are considered to be highly accurate, but the test does not completely rule out the coronavirus infection. To get the most precise readings, you need to acquire a swab test, or RT-PCR test.

Q: Is saliva or nasal COVID test more accurate?

A: First and foremost, the saliva test is not an alternative to the nose and throat COVID-19 PCR test, which is still the most accurate diagnostic test for anyone who is suspected of having COVID-19. Although the laboratory testing process is the same, a saliva sample is only about 85 per cent as accurate as a nose and throat swab.

Q: Can you use nasal swab on throat?

A: The FDA says swabbing the throat with tests authorized for use only with nasal swabs could cause harm. One potential harm, according to the agency, would be decreased test sensitivity, although studies so far haven't found that to be the case.

Q: Is rapid antigen test a nasal swab?

A: Tilt your head back and fully insert the soft swab tip straight back (not up) into your nose until you hit resistance (up to 2.5 cm). Make sure the soft swab tip is fully inside the nose. 4. Rotate the swab several times against the wall of the nose and let it sit for a few seconds to absorb nasal secretions.

Q: How do you do a Covid swab test?

A: Insert the entire collection tip of the swab provided (usually ½ to ¾ of an inch, or 1 to 1.5 cm) inside the nostril. Firmly sample the nasal wall by rotating the swab in a circular path against the nasal wall at least 4 times. Take approximately 15 seconds to collect the specimen.

Q: What are the advantages of swabbing in microbiology?

A: This process enables the food regulators and food business owners to know if a food processing area is clean and safe. In environmental swabbing, microbiological testing of equipment, utensils, and food preparation surfaces is conducted with the help of different swab techniques to detect the presence of any pathogens.

Q: Which is the best at home COVID test?

A: The COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test is an FDA-authorized, over-the-counter, self-administered test that delivers results in 15 minutes. It easily slid into our best overall spot because its results are clearer than most and it has minimal components, which makes testing a breeze.

Q: What happens if I use an expired COVID test?

A: Unless the FDA has extended the shelf life of your box of COVID-19 tests, it's not recommended you use them after they've expired. Here's why: The COVID-19 test parts could degrade or break down over time, leading to inaccurate or invalid test results.

Q: How do you use a nasal test kit?

A: Put the soft part up your nose, all the way up until it you feel it touch the back of your nose. Keep moving the stick around. Use the soft end of the same stick and do the other side of your nose. When you're done put the stick into the tube and stir it 10 times.

Q: How do you use a swab test kit for Covid?

A: With your finger, mix thoroughly by flicking the bottom of the vial. Gently insert the swab no more than 2 centimeters (3/4 inch) into the LEFT nostril. Then, slowly rotate the swab at least 5 times in a circular path for a total of 15 seconds.

Q: How long do I leave the swab in the liquid?

A: Immerse swab tip into liquid in the test tube, swirling and stirring the swab for 10 seconds. Squeeze the swab 10-15 times by pinching the tube against the swab. Keep swab immersed in the liquid and let stand for 2 minutes in the tube stand. Remove swab from test tube while squeezing out remaining liquid.

Q: How to do a nasal rapid test?

A: Carefully read the instructions that came with your test before you start. Some test instructions have a QR code that you can scan to watch a video. inside wall of the nose 2cm deep in a circular motion. Five times or 15 seconds in each nostril.

Q: How do you do a COVID test on your nose?

A: Insert the fabric tip of the swab just inside one nostril (about 1.5cm up your nose). Gently wipe the swab around the inside of your nostril in a circular motion 5 times for at least 5 seconds. Slowly remove it. No force is needed and you do not have to push far into your nostril.

Q: Can I take a nasal COVID test after eating?

A: Do NOT eat, drink, chew gum, smoke, or vape for at least 30 minutes before collecting the sample. 2. If you have access to a facial tissue, blow your nose before the test.

Q: If my nasal swab test result is negative, what should I do?

A: If you test result is negative by the test, you also need to obey the local regulations. If you experience symptoms such.
as fever, headaches, migraines, loss of sense of smell and taste, contact the nearest health facility recommended by your local authorities.

Q: What should I pay attention to in order to have the optimal test result?

A: Always follow the instructions for use correctly. Perform the test immediately after collecting the sample. Apply two drops from the extraction tube into the specimen well of the test card. Too many or too few drops can lead to an incorrect or invalid test result.
